Hot Weather Hair Care

Hot Weather Hair Care

The heat is here and it's easy to overlook our hair while we're focused on protecting our skin but, we have to show our hair some love too! Whether your hair is color treated, natural, fine, thick, or anything in between, here are ways to protect your hair from Summer's heat, humidity, and UV rays.

1. Cover Up!

Like with our skin, it's important to shield your hair from the sun. Whether it's a hat, t-shirt, or towel, preventing UV rays from hitting your hair and scalp will save you from damage, color fading, brassiness, dryness, and irritation! With a wide brim hat, it also reduces further damage from wind, especially if your hair is prone to tangling.

Use a hat!

2. Switch to a Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner, and Clarify

If you're frequently swimming or outdoors in the sun, it's important to opt for a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. One of our favorites is by Abba, a sulfate free, vegan, paraben free, cruelty free, and no sodium chloride added shampoo and conditioner. While covering up from the sun with a hat is good, heat surrounds our hair and when swimming in chlorine or salt water, dryness is likely to happen. After swimming, at the bare minimum rinse your hair right away with clean water and with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner if possible. Not doing so allows salt and chlorine water to sit in your hair exacerbating dryness, leaving residue, and creating a flakey tangled mess. Use a detox/clarifying shampoo up to once a week to remove any product buildup or chlorine/ salt water. Just be sure to follow up with a deep-conditioning treatment/mask afterwards to restore moisture.

3. Skip the Hot Tools

At least once or twice a week, give your hair a break from blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons. Summer with longer days and shorter nights already exposes our hair to enough heat and adding hot tools (usually which is 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) is not going to help. At the bare minimum, use a heat protector! One of our favorites is Olaplex's new No. 9 which works as a anti-oxidant styling serum for frizz control, detangling, AND heat protection up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit!

4. Moisturize Daily!

Before taking a dip or going about your day, use a leave- in conditioner to keep your hair moisturized and protect it from absorbing too much saltwater or pool chemicals. Some leave- in conditioners double as a detangler and UV protector too like Pureology's Multitasking Leave- In Spray

Moisturize Daily!

5. Be Gentle

With the potential for more sun damage, our hair will likely be more fragile in the summer making it even more important to be gentle. Avoid pulling anything through your hair when it's wet, this is when it's weakest. Use a wide tooth comb instead of a brush to gently untangle hair or even start with finger combing. When wearing a hat, opt for a looser fit. And finally, towel dry by gently patting!
